Are you affected by this phenomenon?
Would you know if you were?
The Dunning-Kruger Effect is a bias in thinking where people believe that they are smarter and more capable than they really are. Simply put, the less someone knows, the more they overestimate their abilities.
Kruger and Dunning’s studies consistently show amateurs are more confident in their skills than experts in their given fields.
They surmised that people with a lack of knowledge or expertise:
- Are prone to overestimate their knowledge and skills
- Are not able to recognise those that do have the skills and expertise
- Lack the ability to recognise their own shortcomings
If they receive training, however, these people become better at estimating their own skills
